Also called: HDL, Hypercholesterolemia, Hyperlipidemia, Hyperlipoproteinemia, LDL
Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that occurs naturally in all parts of the body. Your body needs some cholesterol to work properly. But if you have too much in your blood, it can stick to the walls of your arteries. This is called plaque. Plaque can narrow your arteries or even block them.
High levels of cholesterol in the blood can increase your risk of heart disease. Your cholesterol levels tend to rise as you get older. There are usually no signs or symptoms that you have high blood cholesterol, but it can be detected with a blood test. You are likely to have high cholesterol if members of your family have it, if you are overweight or if you eat a lot of fatty foods.
You can lower your cholesterol by exercising more and eating more fruits and vegetables. You also may need to take medicine to lower your cholesterol. You can take your medicine through online pharmacyeasily.

Isn't there a good cholesterol as well as a bad cholesterol? While high cholesterol has been noted as being genetic, our diets and lifestyle also control our cholesterol too.

Children who are at high risk of having an elevated cholesterol should have their cholesterol tested. Risk factors include having a parent with an elevated blood cholesterol level of 240mg/dl or higher, being overweight, and/or smoking.

Children with an acceptable total cholesterol of less than 170 mg/dl should have a repeat test within 5 years.
Borderline levels (170-199 mg/dl) should be repeated and the two results averaged together. If the average value is greater than 170 mg/dl or if the initial test was greater than 200 mg/dl, then a 12 hour fasting lipoprotein analysis should be done, which includes triglyceride, HDL and total cholesterol levels. LDL levels can be estimated by subtracting the HDL from the total cholesterol.
Testing should also be done for children who have a parent or grandparent that, before age 55, had coronary atherolsclerosis or a myocardial infarction (heart attact), angina pectoris, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), or sudden cardiac death. Instead of a total cholesterol, in this situation, children should have a 12 hour fasting lipoprotein analysis. Because the results of lipoprotein analysis can be very variable, all children should have the lipoprotein analysis repeated and the results averaged together.

The higher your blood cholesterol level, the greater your risk for developing heart disease or having a heart attack. The CardioChek® home cholesterol test system is the first and only system that provides personal, at-home testing of total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It also has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration and is CE marked. In just two minutes, you can regularly track your cholesterol levels at home, between physician visits. Why wait and worry? Take two minutes to be sure.

Who has high cholesterol?
* Throughout the world, blood cholesterol levels vary widely. Generally, people who live in countries where blood cholesterol levels are lower, such as Japan, have lower rates of heart disease. Countries with very high cholesterol levels, such as Finland, also have very high rates of coronary heart disease. However, some populations with similar total cholesterol levels have very different heart disease rates, suggesting that other factors also influence risk for coronary heart disease.
* High cholesterol is more common in men younger than 55 years and in women older than 55 years.
* The risk for high cholesterol increases with age.
